Can You Put A Full-Size Mattress On A Queen Frame? (Explained)

Making sure that you have the proper sleep accommodations can be essential to the way your home looks as well as the way that you sleep at night.

If you have a few different bed sizes in your home, you may be curious as to which of these will work together and which will require you to purchase new frames.

One of the most popular questions we get asked is whether or not a full-size mattress will fit on a queen frame.

The queen-size bed is quite popular, and finding a frame for one can sometimes be easier and even cheaper than finding one for a full-size mattress.

Let’s take a look at whether or not you can put this full-size mattress on a queen frame or if you will need to purchase an entirely new frame for your bed.

It is possible to put a full-size mattress on a queen frame, yet there will be a difference in the size of the mattress and the frame.

The queen-size frame is designed to accommodate a mattress that is 60 inches by 80 inches.

The full-size mattress is only 54” x 75”.

As you can see, this is going to leave some room on either side of the mattress and at the top and bottom.

When you first put the mattress on the bed, you will see these size differences, and it will look rather odd.

However, it can still be used because it is more an issue of aesthetics than functionality.

The good news is that sometimes there are a few things you can do to help ensure that the overall look is better, and the people who are sleeping there are more comfortable.

Let’s take a look at how you can make a full-size mattress work on a queen frame.

How To Make A Full-Size Mattress Work With A Queen Frame

Now that you understand the size differences between the full-size mattress and the queen frame, you will have to decide how you would like to handle these size differences.

The good thing about the size differences between these two mattresses is that it is not so big that you won’t be able to get them to work.

Typically, a small adjustment on either side can do the trick.

Here are a few ways to get this to work.

1. Use Pillows, Comforters And Mattress Covers

Are you one of those people who like to have a very comfortable bed?

Maybe you already have a pillowtop cover and a thick comforter on your bed.

If you consider the width of these items, chances are you are going to get very close to making up the size difference between the full and the queen.

As you can imagine, with the width of the mattress, you only have to make up a total of six inches.

If you can get an inch or two on both sides, that will get you more than halfway there.

This should not be difficult to do, and in many situations where you have this occurring, like a guest room or even a kid’s room, it can work just fine.

Of course, the issue sometimes becomes the headboard because the headboard may stand out a little when the mattress is smaller.

Luckily, you should be able to add a few extra pillows at the top of your bed, and the headboard will seem to adjust accordingly, and you will barely notice.

This is the easiest way to make a full-size mattress work on a queen frame, but it is not the only way.

2. Adjust The Bed Frame

If you have a metal bed frame, it could be adjustable.

When you look at the way the frame is designed, you may see a few extra notches for different sizes.

In fact, some bed frames can change from a twin to a tall twin, and others can change from a full to a queen.

When you realize you have this issue of a full-size mattress and a queen bed frame, the first step would be to take a look and see if the bed frame is adjustable.

If you are able to adjust the frame, you will need some basic tools and an extra set of hands.

A wrench or screwdriver is typically needed to remove the bolts that are currently holding the frame together.

Once you have them removed, you can then slide the bars slightly closer together and put the frame back together.

In addition, if your bed frame is one that was purchased directly from a well-known manufacturer, you may have the option to purchase new brackets for the frame.

The new brackets can often be put into place, and they allow you to change the overall size of the frame.

Remember, when adjusting for a full-size mattress, one of the most important things is to focus on the width.

Although the height is about five inches different, you can easily slide the mattress down and fill in the top and bottom with soft materials that will not stand out.

The thing that stands out and looks the funniest at times is the width.

3. Cut Down Platform Bed

If you have a platform queen bed but only have a full-size mattress, chances are you can cut it down.

The platform bed can be cut down so that it matches the size of the full-size mattress.

In other words, you will need to take some inches off of the size and the top to turn your queen platform into a full platform.

This is much easier said than done and something that you will have to have some skills in carpentry to be able to pull off.

If you are new to working with tools and have never attempted a project like this before, chances are you will need some help and direction.

Ideally, you will want to work with one side of the platform and cut down each of the slats so that they are the proper length.

Once you have these cut down, you can attach the base again and ensure that it is sturdy and stable.

The process is going to be time consuming if you are new to working with tools and making adjustments like this.

However, if you really want the full mattress to work on the queen frame, this is the way to go.

It is a bit harder to get a queen headboard cut down to match the full-size bed.

Chances are you will ruin the aesthetics of the headboard should you try to do this.

Keep in mind it is best to ensure that your bed is stable and sturdy above everything else.

If any of the accommodations you are making will lead to the bed not being able to accommodate weight, then you must consider another option for your home.

Sometimes it makes sense to look at the pricing of a full frame and see if these projects make sense or if it is worth just buying the full frame.

You may be able to sell your current queen frame and put the money towards the full.

Are A Full Bed And A Double Bed The Same?

There are quite a few questions that come up about bed sizing and which ones are the best and most common.

The full bed and the double bed names are often used interchangeably.

The reason behind this is that the beds have the same dimensions.

Essentially, there is no difference between a full bed and a double bed, people are just accustomed to calling it one way or the other, and they tend to stick with it.

In the mattress industry, it is much more common to see the name of the bed referred to as a full.

You will not see the term double used that often, and this is likely because the term double can be confusing to some consumers.

The term double bed makes people feel as though they are doubling the size of the twin when this is just not the case.

When you have a double bed, it simply means that it is built for two people.

Can Two People Sleep In A Full Bed?

If you have a guest room in your house, you have likely thought about how to outfit it to make it a good sleeping situation for your friends and family who come to visit.

One of the decisions that many homeowners have to make is whether or not to put a full or a queen mattress in a guest room.

The best way to handle this or consider it is to think about how you would be most comfortable.

To outfit a guest room with full-size accommodations is quite a bit cheaper.

However, the bed itself is also a bit smaller.

However, this should not mean that two people cannot sleep in the bed.

As we have seen, the bed will be three inches shorter on both sides and about 2.5 inches shorter on the top and the bottom.

Two people will easily be able to fit in the full bed, and this is really considered the standard size bed for a couple.

Of course, as everything goes with our modern world, the queen and the king mattress have become most popular because they are larger and look grander.

Some people love having this extra space in their bedroom, and others find that it is not necessary.

Another thing to keep in mind is the size of the bedroom itself.

Some bedrooms simply don’t have the room to accommodate a queen or king-size bed.

The only type of mattress that you may be able to fit in a room like this is a full-size.

If the full is the best that you can get to work, do not worry too much about the comfort and the ability of two people to sleep as it should not be an issue at all.

Can Two Full Mattress Make A Queen?

Many people that enjoy a king-size bed have simply put two twin-size beds together to make the queen.

The size of the king is the same as two twin size beds put together.

With a queen-size bed, there is really no other smaller option that can be put together to make a queen bed.

Of course, some mattress manufacturers will make a split queen.

The split queen is used when certain beds have functionality on one side that they do not have on the other.

The split queen is not a common size, and it is something that you will rarely find for sale.

It is primarily used in manufacturing a mattress where there will be adjustable sides to the mattress.

Two full mattresses would be much larger than a queen and also much larger than a king.

Although you could put these two mattresses together, you would need to find sheets and comforters that would work on this bed, and that will likely take a custom solution.

Most of the time, the only sizes you can buy for are king, queen, full, and twin.

Can A Full-Size Mattress Fit A Queen Headboard?

Comfortable bed with new mattress in room

Sometimes you find a great headboard for a bed, but the mattress is not the right size.

In this situation, the bed platform or frame may be the proper width and length, and the only issue is the headboard itself.

One of the great things about this situation is that if you get a bit creative, you may be able to get this to work.

The first thing that you will have to consider is the way the headboard is mounted.

If this is a headboard that fits into the frame and you have a full frame, you will run into some issues.

In addition, if the headboard is an oversized queen headboard, the difference in size between the mattress and the headboard may be a bit too much to make work.

Most of the time, people find that this look can even give the bed a modern design and make it look great.

Some hotels have had to use this concept in the past when they have rooms with full mattresses but only queen-size headboards to use.

Try to make sure you have the right pillow and blanket set up, and the overall look will probably be relatively easy to pull off.

Conclusion

Hopefully, you now feel ready to make a decision about your full-size mattress and whether or not it will work on your queen frame.

Chances are, the queen frame will create a little bit of a challenge, but not something that you won’t be able to work with.

The queen frame typically takes a bit of adjusting, but then you will have a finished product that looks comfortable and impressive for those who are staying in your home.

Remember that a full bed is more than enough space for two people to sleep comfortably.

You should not have trouble getting a good night’s rest, even if the frame is a little big for the bed itself.
